BOTOX® & Dermal Fillers

Injection of Botulinum toxin (BOTOX®) into the facial muscles responsible for squinting and frowning softens appearance by temporarily inactivating them – the effect lasts approximately 3 to 4 months.

Wrinkles that appear with movement (dynamic lines) may be treated with BOTOX – and typical target areas include between the eyebrows, the forehead, and ‘crows feet’ around the eyes. The use of toxins in facial aesthetics has become increasingly sophisticated, hence other subtle points are often also addressed. Examples of this wider scope of practice includes brightening eye expression by tiny adjustments of lid opening, correcting eyebrow asymmetry, improving lipstick lines or creases along the chin, and reducing downturns at the corners of the mouth.

Only short appointment times are required for BOTOX injection, usually 20 minutes depending on the extent of treatment areas requested. Effects are apparent  from 48 hours onwards and Miles Banwell routinely sees patients again at 7 days for fine-tuning. Results are stable for 3 to 4 months, at which point the procedure may need repeating as muscle activity increasingly returns.

Dermal fillers are most widely used to improve mild to moderate facial lines that are present at rest (static lines), e.g. the nasolabial line (nostril to corner of mouth). They are also used increasingly to restore lost volume more generally in the face – thereby softening under-eye hollowing, augmenting cheeks and camouflaging lower-face jowls. With age, skin and tissues becomes thinner and use of dermal fillers or microfat grafting can help counteract this process. Various injectable dermal fillers are available to restore lost volume, each with slightly differing composition / attributes, designed for different parts of the face, different depths of injection, and with differing duration of results. Miles routinely uses in his practice Juvederm®, Voluma® and Volbella®.

Fillers are injected in clinic and a typical appointment will require 30 to 45 minutes depending on the extent of treatment requested. Mr Banwell will discuss with you which areas may be most suited to fillers, what product might work best or indeed whether alternative treatments altogether such as microfat grafting or other surgical procedures might be more appropriate. Some minimal facial bruising or swelling may persist for a few days following injection, but during this time makeup can be worn and routine skin regimens followed. The duration of results will vary depend on the product used and the site of injection, but are typically between 6 months and 2 years.
